Interview of Ten Years

The whole purpose of this interview is too help the audience get an idea of who they are, who they want too be, and who they want too connect with, as well as getting to know the band personally, the questions are fairly vague, rather minimalist to give the full potential for a good answer and a wider range of answers, it's very much based on their music, and themselves as a band rather than a one to one interview. We want to know how they convey their image and who their ideal audience is, and where they'd like to be 'ten years' from now.

1) What are you listening to at this moment?

2) What bands/artists influenced you to start your band

3) Who is your favourite musical icon?

4) When you compose a song where do you get your ideas from and how does a song evolve?

5) Why choose the current artwork you have at the moment, does it represent anything in particular?

6) What tracks do the band most enjoy performing live and why?

7) How would you describe your current image and how to you want to represent and convey yourself to listeners and potential listeners?

8)
Anything you would like to tell your current or potential fans?

9)
Where would you like to be ten years from now? (ha ha) ;)

ANSWERS: Jake Bowman on behalf of Ten Years as well as himself

1. Wolves in the throne room, I hate myself, welcome the plague year, the effort, Neil perry, saves the day, make do and mend

2. Black flag, modern life is war

3. Jeffrey Eaton, vocalist of modern life is war. The album "witness" is perfection lyrically and musically

4. Find a rad chord that just sounds horrible and work from there then come up with a few riffs and I'm done. but lyrically most of the songs are more about my perception of the world and everyone it. its just my disappointment in everything I'm not much of an optimist. also we touch on subjects that I've experienced and the others in the band have experienced personally.

5. It just shows that we're not a band that accepts the way society is today. like I don't expect you'd see many people wearing a t-shirt with an inverted cross with some rotting heads on it unless you actually wanted to make a point.

6. I prefer playing our newer stuff live its more true to me and it's not like conventional hardcore it's darker with a lot of inspiration from other styles of music such as black metal, sludge, 90's screamo. our newest song ruins is the title track of our new demo CD that's gonna come out sometime in 2010 it pretty much is the epitome of the disappointment i feel, the lines;

"this world is in ruins
with no sense of hope i walk alone
but at least I'm comforted by the fact that
humanity is falling on its knees
with only ourselves to blame"

Sum us up pretty much. but yeah ruins is my favourite track to play its just starts slow builds up slows down and builds up again with a ending which is just havoc.. but yeah its my favourite track to play as its just full of energy and is one to get people moving.

7. I'm not one for an image i just have no problem in shoving how i feel down peoples throats whether they like it or not hence I'm not in this band for the popularity I'm in it to put my anger into something that's kinda productive. and if listeners get one thing from the band i want it to be that this world is going to hell for example the Copenhagen summit that just happened they're trying to save the planet but some countries wont budge what they've agreed to do so far is not enough, it's like are you fucking retarded? if you don't do anything the planets fucked 'cos you cant be bothered to cut carbon emissions in your country... yeah i hate everyone.

8. we're not gonna make a change, we're just 4 angry kids that are still fighting against the conventional way of life and want to let people know that this world is not a happy place deep down

DONE!

Hope you liked that, was it crazy enough for you?
the funny thing is ..its all true.

Here are the lyrics for the pop promo-
Death of A Devil

Why did you have to fuck my life up so bad
all i feel for you is pure hatred
if the rumours I've heard are true
then thank fuck you're gone
all i ever wanted was to see you fucking die
and now I'm stuck in this hollow
a never ending dream
this is my eternity
a dark hell from what nights never seem to end,
all i have is regret
regret caused by abandoning hope
and everything i could of loved
but may he have mercy on me
'cos I'm not a kid
I've had my last chance
and the glory never came
my last dance is over
the last curtain calls

15th December, first filming session

Today was our first day too attempt filming after last year this was only our 2nd time using cameras and it was a trouble having to get used to them again. We got there eventually with 2 cameras and 2 tripods as we trudged into town with the intention of filming people walking down the high street, just a few shots possibly about ten minutes altogether just to put some little sections into the video.
We decided against the idea completely and came up with another. We rang Jack the guitarist of the band, and asked what he was doing, as we were supposed to be using him to film as well.
Turns out the band had a gig that night, in Norwich. Who were we too pass up the opportunity? We decided to take up on the offer and got a train to Norwich so we were ready too meet the band there.

It took place in 'The marquee' pub, a very grotty pub, where there weren't many people, but it was after all a Tuesday night. There were 3 bands playing, and Ten Years were the 2nd on the bill- which was a good place to be!! The first band warmed the crowd up and then Ten Years began to develop some atmosphere into the place. The headlining band was the one that everyone came too see, so either way, the bands all, brought in the people.

Charlie and I were at the ready with our cameras, but no tripods, we wanted all handheld footage to give the filming a bit more of an 'edge' with a more authentic feel. The disadvantage to this was there was a lot of footage that could have been excellent but the lack of lighting definitely tainted a lot of what we got. As you can see from the pictures below, which aren't that clear anyway, there isn't a lot of lighting in the place, it's basically a garage extention. A really good venue though, but we should have thought to bring extra lighting, hopefully the footage will turn out well!

The Back Room-
THE BACK ROOM at Marquee Norwich has quickly become one of the best up and coming venues in Norwich with some great acts and a great atmosphere to match, at THE BACK ROOM we strive to make the gigging experience as easy and enjoyable as possible and will help out in any way we can. We have a team of regular promoters who offer you the best in up and coming bands from across the uk and overseas. THE BACK ROOM is a venue run by musicians for musicians and we stay true to this by making all the shows as low cost entry as we can. We hope to see ya at a show soon!

Group Treatment: Cinematography (My Contribution)

For our tasks to be completed accurately I took into consideration various rules, codes and conventions use by professionals, when filming with ay type of video camera. These include "Framing" "Match on action","180 degree line rule" and "Handles" amongst many other things.
Although we will be using many rules too film, we can't make the video entirely smooth, the typical characteristics of our video should be edgy messy and gritty.

For the establishing shot, we wanted the whole band, in a VWS (Very wide shot) along with a long shot, this will then contain the landscape but gives the viewer a more specific idea of setting. A long shot may show the viewers the building where the action will take place, such as our brick wall, with a very minimalist background. We want the members of the band to be wearing clown masks to give an eerie feeling to the whole video, or just the beginning to create a an intense impact for the audience.

In slow motion we'll slowly zoom out, and a low angle is a camera angle that looks up at the subject. This is the opposite of a high angle and makes the subject look more powerful. This can make the audience feel vulnerable and small by looking up at the character. This can help the responder feel empathy if they are viewing the frame from another character's point of view. four will hopefully reach the floor at the same time and there'll be a 'booming' sound effect, as they hit the floor. 3rd shot will be a close up of all four mask faces fitting tightly into the shot.

We will also be using space in four ways

1)INTIMATE
Eighteen inches away. Distance of LOVE, COMFORT, TENDERNESS between individuals

This will be used during the middle of the video, when they are all hanging out. And we can just get natural shots of them. It'll be very much like a documentary or following a band on tour.

2)PERSONAL
-Eighteen inches to about four feet away. Reserved for friends and acquaintances

This will be used during the middle of the video, when they are all hanging out. And we can just get natural shots of them. It'll be very much like a documentary or following a band on tour. Considering they are all round one band members house, we'll get the atmosphere and comfort that one will have in their own home.

3)SOCIAL

-Four feet to about twelve feet away. Business and casual social gatherings

4)PUBLIC
-Twelve to about twenty feet away

Detailed Synopsis

For the synopsis, we have collaborated our ideas and the treatment has been delegated to each member of our group, and I agreed to be the producer, and film most of the footage, and over all look over the entire group, and therefore the Treatment for the Cinematography of the video.
Only Chris and I are now in the group, as a member has left, so we are both taking more than one role.
We have changed the orginial synopsis quite a bit as we realised we can't do everything that was planned before with just the two of us.

Begininng: We want the band getting ready to play a gig, we want them warming up and getting the crowd ready for thier performance. We want to show the raw emotion and basically, blood sweat and tears that goes into getting ready to perform to a bunch of strangers.
There will be no establishing shot, only randon shots throughout of the whole band. We want to follow the fingering of a guitar and sync it upto the music.

Rough Synopsis

For the synopsis, we have collaborated our ideas and the treatment has been delegated to each member of our group, and I agreed to be the producer, and film most of the footage, and over all look over the entire group, and therefore the Treatment for the Cinematography of the video.

4 boys, with no time for anyone.

First scene standing on a wall, posed together all in clown masks. Then they all jump off in the same time, landing feet first on the ground at the same time.

We then want too get a shot of them all having a laugh as boys do, and as their all close, we want to show that as a band and as a group of friends they are even closer, through a bond of music.

It’ll be footage, in the house, on the street, and other public places where they’re together, playing the Xbox, eating, talking, and just generally wasting their time away together, when they aren’t practicing.

There is also a scene in the high street where we will get them to stand in the middle, during the morning, midday and evening. So you can see the transition through the day also there is an underlying connotation of their journey through the video.

Lastly we will get the band to perform at Jacks house, their other friends will be attending wearing the bands merchandise enthusiastic with the performance.

Planning and design for print adverts

The genre of the band is Hardcore, from this I have come to the conclusion by looking at other print adverts is that it is too be kept simple, and dark. Perhaps an image of the band would fit it well, as if it is thier first album, and you want to embed an image of this band into the public audience heads. The initial idea is that they know who the band is for furture reference, and if all is kept similar you will be able to take more in from the Cd cover, and print ad.

The ideas that I felt were needed to be taken into consideration were the elements of continuity; by this I mean the images used within the promotional package. I felt that one image should be used for the magazine advert and poster which will derive from the CD Digipack, this is so that the audience can relate to one another through the use of an image as it is easier to remember an image than a name of an up and coming band that you have never heard before. It would be wise to choose a different effect for each image, say one was made black and white, and the other sepia.

My ideal set would be each image having a coloured tinge to each image, not to the extent to which you cannot distinguish the images from one another, but just a slight tinge, so you know that the image from the cd cover, magazine and poster are all the same image just with a different effect, just to add a bit of variety to the designs so that it doesn't seem to the audience that the band is plain and bland. We have kept it all simple so that fans of the band would understand that it was the same band from one item to the next.

Planning and deisgn for cd digipack

We have had an induction on Photoshop and to be fair, a very short one. It's ridiculously hard to use, but I have managed to work around it.

Following a class discussion, I had a few ideas about what our DigiPak should contain. As a class we agreed the DigiPak/CD Covers should contain:
  • Band, Song and Record Label logos
  • Titles - Band, song/album name
  • Track listing
  • Copyright Protection logos and information (©, ®, ™)
  • Barcode & Price
  • DVD details - age certification or 'Parental Advisory: Explicit Content' label
  • Pictures - front, back, middle (inside and outside)
  • 4-Sided with 2 Spines- 2 pics outside (front/back covers), possibly 2 inside
  • 6-Sided with 3 Spines- 3 pics outside (front, middle, back covers), 2 inside, with Production pics or a "Production & Artwork" booklet
  • Collector items
  • Competition entry forms
  • Limited Edition - 'Exclusive DVD included', 'Bonus tracks', or 'uncut version'.
Then, as a class, we also discussed the Contents and Features to be included on the DVD in the DigiPak, depending on whether we had a DVD in the DigiPak or not. We agreed the DVD should showcase the artist.

We have used a 4 piece digipack template, with the inside cover where the CD sits, and another picture to the left of it, and of course the front and back cover.

While being at the bands house we had a chance to take a few pictures of them, and a member of the band has a little brother who also took pictures. We used the pictures of the band practicing in the cellar, and one just against a wall.

Initially the picture on the front is just a silhouette of the band, and I think is brilliant, because it's simple yet effective, instead of overloading the album cover otherwise, it's a good portrayal of the album name, and the way the band would like to be seen.
The back cover runs along the same theme with a black background, keeping it simple. The font is all the same, and grey in colour. With this we have added a bar code, copyright symbol, and track listing.

"Insert Picture"

This is the final copy of what i have done and features the front and back cover, the back of which I've kept quite simple and dark because I think it has all the characteristics of the band. As for the inside, where the CD goes, is a personal picture one of the band members has drawn on paint and shows the lighter side of the band, just being friends, and having a laugh.
Also on the inside is a picture of the band in performance which is quite a nice picture, and I have edited it to the best my possible standard for Photoshop...which is quite poor to be fair.

Band Marketing/Promotional ad

Digipak is a patented style of compact disc or DVD packaging, and is a registered trademark of AGI Media, a MeadWestvaco, Inc. resource, which acquired the original trademark holder, IMPAC Group, Inc., in 2000.
-Wikipedia

These particular examples are what Chris and I have chosen as an example. This particular band are also very similar to the band we have used for our Pop promo.
Gallows are also a hardcore band, and are almost the same genre as Ten Years. The design of this example uses dark colour and is also simple getting across who the band are and they have used a distinctive typeface so thier fans understand that it leads from one album to the next. An image which will be embedded and people would remember.
The Gallows followed exactly this way of marketing so that their audience could recognise this band by one image used on all of their media.

If the images were too different from one to the next then it would be harder for the consumer (that being the audience/fans of the Gallows) to establish which image is the dominating image that represents the band as a whole.

Synopsis and Treatment for Pop Promo

Synopsis-

Narrative-

One half one hand held video footage, tour style, black and white, amateur, rough, sketchy. Boys being boys, having fun, having a lark, practicing, rehearsals, driving around, chilling out.

Second half- the more professional side of the video, with a story line. Smooth shots with the cameras set up properly. Standing in the street, morning, afternoon, evening, goes through the day, people rushing past them. Includes footage of them being less serious to a more professional outcome nearing the end of the video, which finalizes with their gig.

Mis en scene-

1st Part

In black and white because they need to be more attractive, it makes the footage look more gritty and most videos in the hardcore genre have been put into black and white so it’s like a characteristic, They mostly all hang out at jacks house, or in his garden, or when they practice in his playroom, they have practice Thursday and Sunday. When they have a mess around it usually includes Xbox, beer, Ade’s car McDonalds, joking around, and food, messing about with their instruments.

Stop video half way through and have a zoom or footage of Jamie, saying something stupid, then music starts again.

Costume- Dress how they usually do, and look the same as the usually do.

2nd part-

Set it Ipswich town, mainly the high street, including late night Christmas shopping, going to use the natural light, and it will be brighter. People rushing past them, trying to symbolize that this band ‘ Have no time for anyone’. Also they’ll be trying to stand out compared generic other bands.

Costume- More groomed, smarted attire, more professional apparel.

Shirt/t-shirt, trainers, jeans

Cinematography-

Introduction:

Standing on a wall, with clown masks. Just before they hit the floor, close up of all 4 members heads, so a mid shot of all of them. They will be wearing their recently made promotional T-shirts with the band logo on the front which also features on their current EP.

Part 1- Documentary

Because it is hand held first there’s going to be plenty of mid shots and close ups of everyone in the band, and the band. Filming from all angles, and getting all the footage we can. So we aren’t focusing too much on what type of shots when it comes to the Tour Video Fish eye lens may be used.

Part 2-Gig

We’re getting the band to do a live performance for us, in one of the band members, Jack’ house. We may have to re record 4 times over making sure we get clear views of the band and each member playing their instrument. Just to get smooth flowing shots. We want these shots to be neat so the band and us have a professional look.

Part 3-Studio

Street Spirit by Radio Head have a pop promo, which we viewed in class. One of the parts from the video has many shots of the lead singer, with different lighting and fading in and out from his face, while singing. He’s moving across different parts of the screen and its blacked out blind him only to show a clear outline of his face. These shots must flow well, and be soft focus, but still edgy in other shots. We’ll do this in the studio, with the leader singer, and may include the others.

Editing-

Choppy rough and edgy shots, not particularly smooth. Black and white, gritty effects.

Individual research

Hardcore punk, often referred to as simply hardcore, is a subgenre of punk rock that originated primarily in North America (though, early examples could be found throughout the world) in the late 1970s. The new sound was generally faster, thicker, and heavier than earlier punk rock. Early hardcore has a quick tempo with drums and vocals in time, whereas modern hardcore punk has drums and vocals which may not be on beat with the tempo.

In the United States, the music genre that became known as hardcore punk originated in different areas in the early 1980s, with notable centers of activity in California,Washington, D.C., New York City, Michigan, and Boston.
***
Since their inception in 1995, Bridge Nine Records has turned from a hobby to one of the biggest and best music brands in the world. What was once a once man operation has grown into a nine-person full-time operation headquartered in Peabody, MA (just outside the label's original home in Boston) with affiliates and distributors worldwide.

Bridge Nine's fiercely independent do-it-yourself work ethic is one of the biggest reasons the label has been able to persevere in a tumultuous music business climate in addition to growing significantly in a time when labels are contracting rapidly. The label has been featured in some of the biggest magazines in music today including Alternative Press and Revolver.

Just fourteen years ago, an avid punk and hardcore music fan named Chris Wrenn started putting out 7" records by some of his favorite local bands. "The label started out pretty slowly", said Wrenn.

***

Many bands feature on the website Bridge9 have influenced many local bands, such as Ten Years, and Dungeons which is one of the old local bands which inspired Ten Years to start their own band, on the Bridge 9 site, it has some of their idols featured along with merchandise, show times, and videos. Many of the videos made by hardcore bands, are black and white, or purely gig footage with very grim shots, on a hand held camera. Without a lot of care or attention. You do rarely get the ones which have been put in a specific location and the band have to act up to a story.

Considering hardcore and punk originated from the era of the Nazis these people in the videos are typical big burly men with shaven heads and a irate and tough attitude, full of anger. Then there is the reasoning for the vocals because they just shout to get a point across. Another characteristics of the hardcore genre is their way of dancing, it's called 2 stepping o moshing and you will see it a lot at live shows. Moshing is something back when the Nazis were around and used to do when they listened to punk thrash and hardcore music and it still goes on today.

Music Promotional Package

When releasing an album or single, you will be selling it in shops or online. When someone purchases this song or album online, you get the 'album artwork' with it. When purchasing a CD single, or album, you also get the album artwork- the cover of the CD. The CD or online single might differ from the album artwork, but they will still be similar in a way, which will most probably be obvious.

Gallows- London is the Reason

Mise-En-Scene (costume, makeup, lighting, location)
Grey suits worn with white shirts and black ties, I think this might be to promote their latest album “Grey Britain”.
You are still able to see the lead singers tattoos on his neck, and head. This way you still realise they aren't quite who they appear to be.
Two men dressed in orange radioactive suits are placing body down but one is clearly wearing adidas trainers
Free runners wearing hoodies g
Location is in the streets of Londoniving them a thug like appearence
An old black taxi looking vehicle transporting them
Police/security have pig faces, this is to represent the British phrase that the police are “pigs”
Low key lighting used for most of the video whereas some is pure daylight
Flare light used
Unfocused shots are used to make the viewer feel uneasy and uncomfortable

Cinematography (shots, framing, camera movements)
Establishing shot of whole band
Through the whole video it's quite slow paced
Smooth shots with many different shots used
Many close ups or mid shots
Many close ups in the taxi of the lead singers face

Editing (transitions, pace, continuity)
Pace is faster when the fight starts and the song drops in
During the song it's all fairly slow paced and calm

Special effects (colours, graphics, CGI)
Slo-mo at start
Shots are dimmed down and given a grey scale tone
All of the video is in slo-mo as if we are being led to something, which we are, a minute before the end the song drops in and then there is a fight between the “pigs” and “thugs” and that is when the shots return to standard motion
During the fight the shots cut from slo-mo shots to standard motion shots.

Mika- We are golden

The promo cover is a lot like the video, vivid, bright and fun, illustrated like his last album cover, consists of a lot of doodles.

By Jonas Akerlund Video Director

Mis en Scene-
Very bright lighting to emphasise the child like genre of the video
Most likely set in the daytime
Everything is verey ecentric
Lots of objects in the room
Cluttered, with typical child's items, such as toys, and purely random objects of interest
All abstract
Tape recorded/ boom box
main prop in intro shot
Creative looking room, artists room
Mainly blue- more male?

Cinematography-
Quick sharp shots of items in the room which resemble adolescence
Close ups of him on the bed jumping about- wearing a scuba mask on face etc
Looks straight into camera often, close up or mid shots
Very fast paced video
Camera is everywhere
View looking up to him, inferior audience
Choppy shots, neat
Swinging from camera (lampshade)

Editing or visuals-
Bright coloured background all the walls are painted in a blue, which is typically a boys colour
Looks through what looks like a kids tunnel tube, playground activity.
Wearing neon's contrasting clothes
UV lights
Roof opens up at end to reveal sky
Lasers coming from his head, wearing a hat
Glowing body
Everything above shows how much of a child's fantasy this is, with all the colours toys and even lasers, the video tunes in with a younger generation.

Genre characteristics of musical style-
Very childlike video
Lots of dancing with toys
Very cheerful
Isn't choreographed well, because he is just being playful which again relates back to a child dancing in their room.
Would appeal to a gay audience, Mika appears to be waxed and practically naked just like children are when younger but very playful and flirtatious
Very messy
A lot of energy
Looks at self in mirror and tries to tense his muscle

Lyrics and visuals-
Completely relates to each other;
Teens
Boys- typically known to have a messy room
'Being golden'
'Being young'- dancing about, immature
Teenage circus he mentions, circus being traditionally bright and quirky
Fancy dress
Fun loving

Music and visuals-
Orchestra of kids sing the chorus
Music fits with playing of tape
Background street noise at the intro and end
Very fast paced video with fast lively parts
Child fantasy (toys)

Audience-
Appeal to a gay audience
10+
The album cover has a child on the front with a book over it's face, you can't put a gender too it
Girls and boys, girls more for the music maybe and perhaps boys for the video

3 analyses of pop promos

Tenacious D- Tribute by Liam Lynch-

(Long Version)

Mis En Scene-
Theatrical attributes of script
A song booth, disco ball and microphone looks slightly cheesy and cheap, but it contributes to the video and the idea of them being rock stars
2 very ordinarily dressed men
They both have a typical grungy look, almost dirty, which has connotations of them being like rock stars with their grungy looks, yet they still look ordinary
Props in sound booth such as their instruments
Dark lighting from behind but a heavier lighting from the front onto their faces.
Later on in the video they are on a set, which is meant too look fake, desert road scenery.

Cinematography-
Looking into the camera as if they are looking at the booth screen but are also looking directly at the audience.
Close ups of the pair
Many mid shots
Over the shoulder view of the couple as they walk towards the devil
Above the veils head is an over the head shot, looking down at the pair, inferior.
2:09 direct look into camera, mid shot
Mid shot of song booth while passers by watch
Lastly close up of old woman at the end cackling.

Editing or visuals-
The devil in the video is glowing but the scenery around him is very simplistic
Flames around his legs which strengthens the image of him being a devil, and has the charateristics you'd expect of a devil
Burst of light from behind as the song harmonises and crescendos which makes a large impact on the video with wind/light.
The couple appear to be caught in wind and you can see the effect it has on them as its blustery through their hair, and you can see it on their faces.
Devil does guitar solo, guitar appears from flames
Devil disappears into the ground
Old woman at the end has her eyes turn red to symbolise that she has now part of the demon in her

Genre Characteristics and of musical style-
Physically holding the guitars
Song is all about the greatest song in the world
Going into booth to record

Lyrics and Visuals-
Fit very well together, good amusing storyline. Cheesy but purposely, a spoof. They take themselves very seriously.
Video fits perfectly with visual
Very simplistic video
Act out what they say in the lyrics
A real performance
Harassing passers by singing to them

Music and Visuals-
Introduction- Kyle and Jack fight about where they are recording, it's a karaoke booth Kyle says, and that you can only do song covers.
Jack is trying to fix the recording booth, with some tools he's brought, which he happens to have on him
Then Kyle starts because the light has turned on.
Acoustic very calm and quite music
Dark scenery mostly

Audience-
They should definitely have a sense of humour
11+
But considering it has the 'devil' in it, not for older generation or devout Christians

Promo-
Fun loving
Humorous
Easy listening
Amusing
Not taking themselves too seriously
2 podgey guys, that know they are, as you can see by the album cover.

What makes a good pop promo?

Making a good pop promo in my opinion is all based on the genre of the band to begin with. You want the video to suit the music you are doing and too publicise well the band in a positive way, or however they want to be portrayed to their audience.

With a pop promo your objective is to sell that band, to sell that particular song to their audience or a wider one. Appealing to who you think it's worth promoting too.
Although many examples of the genre feature the macho rock stars and scantily clad dancers that have become cultural clichés, certain music videos are notable for their cutting-edge techniques and artistic innovations, and some of their directors have achieved auteur status.

History of the development of Pop Promos

Top of the pops was a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly from 1 January 1964 to 30 July 2006. It was traditionally shown every Thursday evening on BBC1, before being moved to Fridays in 1996, and then moved to Sundays on BBC Two in 2005. Each weekly programme consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling many popular new artists, with a rundown of that week's singles chart. Additionally, every year there was a special edition of the programme on Christmas Day featuring some of the best-selling singles of the year.

Although the program was based around live performances from the bands and artists, it was still a way of advertising the artists, with it being chart music, they didn't use videos, and would them playing live to an audience, unless a particular band couldn't make it only then would they show the video. In its extensive history, Top of the Pops has featured many artists, many of whom have appeared more than once on the show to promote many of their records.

With the arrival of the sound films and talkies in 1926,something named ' musical short films ' were then beginning to be produced. Vitaphone shorts (1926–30), which were produced by Warner Bros, featured many bands, vocalists and dancers. Vitaphone was known as a sound film process used on features. This was not the original The first process was called Fuchessound. Vitaphone was the last, but most successful.

A pop promo is more widely known as a music video. It's a short film, or just described as a video that accompanies and song, or some music. The idea behind them is really a marketing ploy, it'll help boost sales of the song artist band and music. Although the origins of music videos go back much further, they came into their own in the 1980s, when MTV which was originally purely music based their format around the medium, and later with the launch of VH1.
The term "music video" first became popular in the early 1980s.

Music videos primarily use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, or live footage, set ups, or have a more theatrical theme even some are filmed like documentaries, and non-narrative approaches. Some music videos blend different styles, for a unique approach as there are many many videos out there, you always want yours to stand out amongst the others.
